HARRY POTTER? - NO WAY by Kellie Copeland Kutz One of the hot topics of discussion are the Harry Potter book. Many children waited with anticipation as the release dates for the books approached. Parents lined up at bookstores to make sure they would get a copy because many report this book series has encouraged their children to read. Shockingly, some churches have purchased the books to use as teaching materials. So what's the attraction to these stories of a boy riding a broomstick? Well, there is obviously an anointing on them, but its not an anointing from God. Recently I discovered a book called Harry Potter and the Bible by Richard Abanes. The author dissects the first four Harry Potter books and explains that t least one-third of these books is actual occult material. Not only that, the Harry Potter character is a liar, a cheat, dishonest and rebellious. However, in these stories, things always work out for him. Harry's bad behaviour seemingly has good consequences. Is that a message you want to give your children? I'm sue it isn't. Witchcraft is expressly forbidden by God. First Samuel 15:23 warns us that "rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft", and "because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, he hath also rejected thee….." Witchcraft and its consequences are very serious. Now if you've allowed your children to read the Harry Potter books, don't get under condemnation. Decide to make a change in your household. Sit down with your children and show them the scriptures where God says these things are wrong so they will understand why they are not to take part in them. Explain to them that John 10:2-5 says we are to recognise and heed the voice of the Good Shepherd and "never [on any account] follow a stranger, but run away from him because [we] do not know the voice of strangers or recognise their call" (The Amplified Bible). If you desire for your children to recognise and obey the voice of the Holy Spirit they need to be reading the Bible and books about God and His principles. It isn't wise to allow them to read material straight from hell – Harry Potter and introduce them to the ways and voice of the devil. Look what God has said about such things: …Thou shall not learn to do after the abominations of those nations. There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord: and because of these abominations the Lord they God doth drive them out from before thee (Deuteronomy 18:9-12). The Harry Potter books are full of the "abominations" mentioned here. Learn to "test and prove" everything your children are exposed to so you can recognise what is good, and separate your family from what is evil (see 1 Thessalonians 5:21-23, The Amplified Bible). Don't give the devil any place in your life or the lives of your children. Recognise that everything he does is the total opposite of what God does. The devil always promotes the things of the flesh which conflict with the things of the spirit: Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of which I tee you before, as I have also told in time past, that they which do such tings shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If e live in the Spirit (Galatians 5:19-25). The things of the flesh are glorified in the Harry Potter books and God has already warned us not to take part in such things. So raise your children in the Word of God instead of the word of the devil. Raise your children to pray in the spirit, not operate in charms and spells. Train them to be Superkids, led by the Holy Spirit and doing mighty things for God.
